The studio
Behind the lens, Maya Okonkwo
I started Aperture & Co. in 2016 with one rule: photograph people the way they actually are, not the way a pose tells them to be. Everything since — the weddings, the magazine commissions, the quiet portraits — comes back to that.
I shoot a blend of medium-format film and digital, chase soft natural light, and edit with a warm, restrained hand. Sessions are unhurried and a little bit collaborative; you should leave them feeling more like yourself, not less.
